Trying to retain Peace in the face of Chaos
My mother has been diagnosed with Stage IV Cancer. She's been losing weight...down to 107 lbs. from 130 a year ago. A Cat Scan revealed a mass in her esophagus and 5 lumps on/in her liver. Today she underwent an endoscopy and they took a sample from the mass. The doctor seemed nervous as he approached to give us the results. He said he knows its cancer even though they won't have the test results back for a week. I spoke with the nurse after my mother left with my brother. She said that I seemed to be taking it well. I told her that I had already began grieving because I didn't think she would be alive much longer. She also didn't think mom had much longer to live...perhaps 6 weeks. Tomorrow she'll get a Pet Scan to see where else the cancer has spread. She's had a giant aneurysm in her head for a couple of years that hasn't burst yet and 9 months ago she broke both arms in a fall.
The chaos lies within the codependent relationship she has with my brother who is 55 years old and living with her. He is an alcoholic. She recently moved from the senior citizen apartment that I found for her, where she allowed my brother to live with her...which was against their rules. He would come and go from the side entrance to stay hidden. Some of the residents were complaining that they thought he was living there, so the Manager called me and asked if he was. Initially, I stayed out of it, but during the time she was in a nursing home for a month after she broke her arm, I called the Manager and told him the truth. To keep it anonymous, he used the excuse of checking on their cat to enter the apartment and told my brother he had to leave. My brother stayed with his only friend for a couple of nights, then my mother gave him money to stay in a cheap hotel for a couple of weeks. During this time, he found a job through a temp agency and he kept the job until they let people go right after Christmas.
The good that came from this was that he now knows he can get a job on his own! Mom found a way to get him back in her apartment. She had her doctor send a form to the Apt. Manager stating that she needed around the clock care and it would come from him. Unfortunately, he reverted back to his old ways after the job ended and began sleeping most of the day and staying up at night. This meant my mother had to creep around quietly during the day, so that he wouldn't yell at her. After her arms healed sufficiently, the Manager gave my brother one day to move out again. So, my mother made the decision to find an apartment, that she can't afford, so that he could live with her. He wouldn't let my other brother or me help her move, so she did most of the work (packing/unpacking) herself.
He continues to emotionally/mentally abuse her, mostly by yelling/complaining about me to her. He is resentful that when my father passed away in 2006, he only received a small monetary amount compared to myself and my brother. Why he blames me for this...who knows. He'll call her names, "whore", "cunt", etc. Even now that she is dying...he continues to harrass her. Filling out forms at the doctor's office, one of the questions was, "Are you experiencing depression". She said, "Oh, Yes". I picked her up to spend the weekend with me, took her out for lunch, gave her a jacuzzi bath, a massage and tried to get her to eat/drink healthy foods. I bought her two new pairs of pants and a shirt, since she's lost weight. I asked her if she was afraid of dying. She said kind of, but also not really. She believes in God and our spirits living.
I arranged for a family reunion at my house on Saturday. We had about 30 people come. My husband taught people to shoot his new bow/arrow, gave people a ride on his tractor and everyone enjoyed spending time with Mom. My thoughts were, why wait until someone dies to get together at the funeral!
My brother called my Mom Sat. morning drunk. He woke her up and started in on her. He'll say things like, "Once you die, I know Sherry will take your car." She has a Will leaving him everything (which has dwindled to nothing but her car). It made me feel depressed and saddened that there can be such dysfunction in the world. It brought back memories of the year she lived with me in 2009, when the two of them would constantly be on the phone yelling at each other. I feel guilty for hoping that she dies soon, so that IT will go away!
During one of the three phone conversations they had in one hour on Saturday, I asked her to hand me the phone, so that I could talk to him. I asked him why he hates me so much. We talked for about 10 minutes and I remained calm. I said, "Do you really want to make her miserable for the remaining months that she'll be alive". We talked about a lot of issues and I hope it will keep him from abusing her as much. I realize my mother perpetuates some of this insanity. She told me on Sunday that when she got home, she was going to tell him what a good time she had and how she was treated like a queen. She has a hate/love relationship with my brother. I asked her to not do that, because it would just antagonize him and make him more jealous of me and my attentions towards her.
p.s. My son has around 19 months clean now (from drugs...he still drinks occasionally) and is doing well in college...he has finals this week. He just got his full driver's license back and will be released from the program he's been in for over a year very soon.
Pick a number at Jail & Roommate Search
Visited J at jail today. You pick a number and have a seat. You can call me crazy - but one of the ways I know God is with me is through the number 3 (which represents "the father, the son and holy spirit"). It has been an odd form of comfort. For a few weeks leading up to me finding J passed out on his bedroom floor and up until a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the number 3 would appear constantly.
Almost every time I looked at the clock it would be 1:33, 10:30, 3:00, etc. and when I would pick a number at jail, it was always 3 or 13. J's inmate number when added together was 13!
When I went to buy new glasses, the bill was $333.63. When I got the oil changed in my car, the mechanic said it was $33.23, and then said "actually it is $30.23, I'm not sure where that extra 3 came from"! There are many other examples.
During this time I was feeling overwhelmed, anxiety-ridden, and all of the other emotions that a parent experiences when they finally comprehend the reality that their child is a drug addict.
Today's visit was fine. One of the positive experiences for him through this has been that his father and father's family have been writing him letters and reaching out. He's gotten letters not only from his father, but from both aunts, his grandmother, grandfather, my brother's ex-wife, my girlfriend, and of course me.
He even had an hour long conversation with his father (they only talk about once or twice a year). His father is planning on coming up from Texas to visit him over Thanksgiving!
While I was in the waiting room, there was a lady that spoke very little English (from Russia) and the police officer wasn't very helpful that was in the waiting room - so I spoke with the officer behind the 2 way mirrored glass and spoke for her. She was there to post $500 bail to get her daughter out. I don't know about the rest of you, but I get more pleasure out of giving than receiving!
I mentioned in an earlier post that my roommate moved out so we've been interviewing potential people. Last night a very nice girl in her late 20's, an engineer going to school at night to obtain her Master's degree (also a marathon runner, takes singing lessons, figure-skating lessons etc. etc.) came over and had dinner with us. She and I have a lot in common: athleticism, eating healthy (she's a vegetarian - I used to be), love of travel, etc. Her family is from the South Pacific Islands - one near Guam - needless to say she is beautiful (both inside and out)!
I have told all three people that have come over some of J's situation. I believe in being open and upfront concerning any possible issues.
She is making a decision by Tuesday - if it is meant to be it will be!
My husband is sick - possibly a virus or the flu. His fever was up to 102 yesterday. Sorry if I offend any men out there, but it seems whenever he is sick (even with a cold and no fever) the world is going to end. I have to say that he has gotten better about it, the older he gets.
Gratitude:
Son is safe and sober

Life goes on...
I called the Rehab last week to see if I could have a tour and they said no.....so I arranged another book drive with a bookstore and took 6 boxes of books over to the Rehab. I asked the gentleman that I brought them to if I could have a tour and he said yes. It was comforting to be able to see where J will be living.
On Friday I went to visit my girlfriend who is in the hospital with H1N1 & pneumonia and dressed in protective gear. I rubbed her back and took flowers. I have known her for 38 years and I told her I loved her for the first time on Friday!
We gave our cat to my cousin yesterday because my husband is allergic to him. It was sad but my cousin has 2 other cats, a dog and two daughters. I'm sure he will adjust!
Today my husband and I rode our Harley for an hour to join our hiking club for a beautiful hike. It was sunny and in the 60's.
J has not called me since I saw him in Court on Thursday. The longest I have ever gone without talking to him is 2-3 days (except for when he was 3 years old when his father lived in Texas and had visitation for 6 weeks and wouldn't let him talk on the phone with me).
J told me recently while he was in jail that it makes it harder for him to talk with or see family while he's there because it makes him want out more. I believe it is his way of not thinking about it so he doesn't have to deal with it!
Gratitude:
My son is safe and sober.
My mother likes her new apartment.
The peaceful feeling I have today.
Finding a good home for my kitty.
Much peace and happiness to everyone!!
Swine Flu & Jail Book Drive
When I saw my son in Jail yesterday he was sick. He said he'd been sick for a few days and filled out a form the day before to be seen, but they hadn't gotten to him yet. Tonight he called and said that they took him to the hospital last night because he had a 101.5 fever. They tested him for the flu and it was negative, so they gave him some sudafed and ibuprofen (none to take to the jail with him though).
He said he feels better today, but that they moved him into a cell block that has 3 cells and he is the only person in the block. They had moved a man out a few hours before they put J in and that man had been sick with H1N1. I asked J if he cleaned everything with a disinfectant (including the phone he was talking to me on) and he said yes!
In an earlier conversation a week ago he was complaining that it was very hard to sleep because he was in a room with a lot of men who would fart and snore all night. Looking on the bright side, I told him tonight that at least he wouldn't have to listen to them. He said he'd rather be in with them now because he is all by himself.
It's funny how we think our current situation is bad and then we find ourselves in one that we find even worse. I told him I've been praying for him since yesterday to get and stay healthy and he thanked me.
I've been working on getting books donated from Half Price Books to me so that I can take them to the Jail. I got approval from the Jail with the condition that they can't be hardbound, romantic or computer related.
Today I am grateful for:
1. My son is safe and sober and overcoming his illness.
2. The beautiful sunny day today.
3. My husband is handy: can fix about anything, knowledgeable about
electrical, welding, mechanics etc. (he's out working on his truck
right now).
4. The backrub he just gave me a few minutes ago (I've been painting, jogging,
cleaning the refrigerator..etc. etc. etc. today)
5. GOD!
